“Plastic has helped advance innovation in our society, but our infatuation with single-use convenience has led to disastrous consequences. Plastics, in all forms-straws, bottles, packaging, bags, etc.-are choking our planet.” Governor Jerry Brown (California).
As a people, if we are willing, united and ready to inconvenience ourselves a little, we can indeed rid our communities of PET bottles waste.
How can we achieve this?
- Encourage more research on eco-friendly packaging materials by giving incentives in form of grants.
- Boost awareness on the dangers of the continued production and usage of single-use plastics. On the long run, we can achieve zero-single-use plastic packaging.
- Liaise with law makers in various constituencies to pass appropriate bills in this regard.
- Advocate for more #BeatPlasticPollution campaigns and communal cleanups periodically aimed at creating behavioural change and sanctity of the environment.
- Create more drop centers and recycling plants. This will no doubt create job opportunities and wealth to many.
- Encourage the use of safer alternatives and bioplastics; which are petroleum-free and designed to biodegrade faster.
- Educate and mandate the people on waste segregation based on waste material. This will make waste management easier.
- Companies who produce PET bottles should be involved by strategizing and actual collection of this plastic waste.
